Gelato vs. Ice Cream vs. Frozen Yogurt

Most of us pride ourselves on our individuality – some of us even revel in being the black sheep of the flock. One of the many ways we show off our uniqueness is our choice in food – specifically, frozen sweets.

But how do all the varieties breakdown and is there a real winner? Uniqueness is great and all, but being the best is even better. So, let’s dig in and find out.

Here’s the scoop:

Round 1: Gelato vs. Ice Cream

First we have a sweet Italian contribution to the American way.

The word “gelato” means ice in Italian, and it’s the only kind of ice cream they actually have there. In other words, don’t go in asking for ice cream if you’re not ready for this Italian delicacy (although, it wouldn’t be the worst mix-up in the world.)

Compared to our ice cream, gelato is more parts milk than actual cream – which actually makes it slightly healthier. The way it’s actually made is also different because its churning is much slower and more steady than the process for making ice cream. Speedy churning ends up adding a lot of air into the mix, making it fluffy.

Gelato, on the other hand is incredibly dense and flavor-full, offering an explosion of fruitiness on the first bite. Gelato also has twice the sugar, making it irresistibly sweet. All of this means that gelato must be served at a slightly higher temperature than other frozen treats, otherwise it will be way too hard to consume safely.

Round 2: Frozen Yogurt vs. Gelato

Here’s where some folks get confused. Yes, they are two completely different desserts!

Frozen yogurt is so-called because the main ingredient is cultured milk, which is filled with healthy bacteria and used as the dairy base. The health benefit of the bacteria, however, is neutralized when you factor in the fact that the whole “freezing” part kills them off, but there’s always other ways (like actual yogurt) to get a good probiotic boost.

Frozen yogurt, or “froyo” as it’s become colloquially known, is extremely popular – especially among younger generations. Where dating adults go get coffee, teenagers get froyo. Over the last several years, frozen yogurt shops have popped up in every single mall or shopping center in the West -and it’s not without reason.

Froyo goes well with just about anything. These shops let you choose any topping from chocolate chips to gummy worms and even marshmallows.  You could say it’s their je ne sais quoi.

The Verdict

Between Ice Cream, Gelato and Frozen Yogurt – the competition is fierce.

From a calorie standpoint, gelato takes last place. It’s increased sugar and density isn’t the greatest for those trying to watch their weight – but the milk is definitely better than the cream. All in all a delicious treat.

Ice cream has the least surgar, but it has the most saturated fat. Froyo is in the middle of both in these categories.

But of course, it’s not always about the health factor. Sometimes you just want a treat – so go for what tastes best. But whether you’re a Gelato Groupie, a Froyo Fanatic, or an Ice Cream Addict, rest easy knowing you’re doing life right one scoop at a time.
